Fighting the Smear Once upon a time, people picked their presidents based on the issues they stood for. Elections were fought not with big money, but with eloquence and debating prestige. The Lincoln-Douglas debates. The Kennedy-Nixon. Those were the days when money had not yet fully corrupted the political system. Discourse meant something, and if often was the decisive factor in who became the next president. Today, modern elections are fought dishonestly, dishonorably, and mind-numbingly irrelevant with regards to what really matters in the lives of our people.
